he watched her stir her coffee from across the table.
something he had watched her do a hundred times.
but there was something different about the way
she looked at the swirls in her cup that morning.
the way she smiled, as if she and the coffee shared an inside joke.
do you think we can do this thing? he asked.
she looked at him, what thing?
the me and you thing?
you mean, the 'we' thing, she said. because you and i had been
doing the you and me thing for quite awhile now.

he looked at her again, and suddenly there were no more questions.
yes, he said.
she smiled. then, she leaned across the table and kissed him.
then, i'm in, she answered.
