Okay, although I no longer consider myself a coffee drinker, I still love coffee and I so love this. Does it count for a recovering coffee addict? |
I spend the majority of my day reading - legal briefs, case law, transcripts, investigation reports, and oh, the dreaded linesheets. So, at the end of the day, as much as I would love to cuddle in bed and read a book of my liking, I can't. I try but a few pages in, no matter how interesting the book, my eyes and brain give up. So, it's a struggle to finish a book, which is shameful for me. And that's why I'm looking forward to this break (did I mention I'm leaving the country for a few weeks?). I intend to not only work on my novel, but also get some pleasure reading in. My friend asked what kind of vacation am I having if I'm going to be working, too? Unfortunately, he doesn't get it, and I didn't feel like explaining.
But, since I don't get to read (or finish) that many books, I try to read a lot of articles, essays, blogs or short stories. (Lately, I've been reading up on a lot of foodie blogs.) Sometimes Oftentimes, the things I read for work can be mind numbing and for the most part, not very pleasant, so I try to stimulate my brain with feel good stories on the web. They're short enough for the limited time I have, but so sweet and they re-energize me to keep trudging along with the not-so-sweet legal readings.
So, here's a few of my recent favorite reads:
40 Weeks to Fatherhood (which I discovered through Anna @ Little Reminders of Love) - because there's just something so endearing about a man who loves and adores his kids. I'm surrounded by children and teenagers (and heck, even adults) with no fathers, meaning, never met them or the fathers just chose to not be around. And the thing is, everyone needs a father as much as they need a mother. This world needs better fathers, and this blog just warms my heart. It's also funny and just oh-so-sweet. One of my favorite posts is "Meet Indiana" - the dog, and these lines: "Indiana is one of those great examples that I plan on showing you over and over that family is whatever you make of it. No matter how many moms, dads, aunts, dogs, cats you have under one roof, these people and animals are going to be your family." Heart melting.
...in sock monkey slippers - I love this foodie blog because not only does it have mouth-watering photographs, but the recipes (I love the lemon sauteed spinach with toasted garlic) are delicious and healthy too. And to top it off, Meredith has an adorable little girl and her blog is filled with stories of motherhood, life, food and how they all relate to one another.
Little Reminders of Love - Anna's blog is not a recent favorite since I've been reading her blog for a few years now. Her blog is in the still favorite category. I can't help loving her because she always posts these quotes that seem to speak exactly what my heart wants to say. Today she posted this: "The fear of getting hurt again has only led you to hurt yourself. Come out now. Come out while there's still some living left to be done. This person who hurt you doesn't deserve to still dictate your life decisions. Your discipline and dedication to structure is an illusion. You're still powerless because you're letting certain incidents define your life. If you really want to be in control again, you have to learn to let go again. It's the only way." The Fear of Getting Hurt Again by Ryan O'Connell
I'm curious, what are you reading (online and off)?
